Bennett Combs resided in Maryland during the Revolution and served in the Maryland State Militia from 1775 through 1782. He was promoted to Captain on June 22, 1780 in the Leonardtown Company of the 21st Battalion. Sometime during the late 1770s, he married his wife, Dorothy, in Maryland. Captain Bennett commanded the Loch Tay. He was third mate on the Nimroud to Auckland in 1864 under Captain Oughton. He left her to serve in the Maori War, sent to the front lines, was wounded a fortnight later, and recovered before the ship left, and re-joined the ship as he was not fit for duty.
